Falk Huettig

Postdoctoral researcher

I’m a Senior Investigator at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen (Netherlands). Since 2023 I’m also an Invited Full Professor of Psychology at ULisboa. Before that I have been Professor of Psycholinguistics and Cultural Cognition at Radboud University, Nijmegen, and a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Brussels (Belgium), Zhejiang (China), and Hyderabad (India).

One of my main interests is to explore how cultural inventions like reading and writing (literacy) shape the mind and brain from the beginning of our lives. I ask diverse groups, such as illiterates in India, young children, individuals with reading disorders, and highly educated individuals to take part in my studies. Together with my expert collaborators I use behavioural measures, functional and structural neuroimaging techniques, and computational modelling to understand the culturally-shaped mind. In essence, I ask to what extent culture and cultural inventions determine what it means to think as a human.

My other main interest are the role of prediction for cognition and perception; and the interactions of language, vision, attention, and memory.

For better or worse, I often end up merging my three main interests (literacy, prediction, language-vision interactions) in experimental studies.
