Pavilhão de Portugal is a very special building with its iconic concrete canopy that seems to float. Described by some as the most beautiful wave of concrete, this large shaded plaza overlooking the river is a place of gathering and for connecting with others, but also a spot for rest and renewal. It is thus emblematic that the building is now part of ULisboa, and finally returns to the community. Projected by Álvaro Siza Vieira for Expo98, Pavilhão de Portugal has been requalified by the architect and his team as a multidisciplinary space, with an Exhibition Center and a Congress Center to host scientific and cultural meetings. With a new Auditorium, it also includes the Mega Ferreira Library and a 24-hour Study Room. We expect that this can be indeed a new house for ULisboa, providing space and support for educational, scientific, and cultural activities. We hope that this beautiful building will inspire greater creativity and honest work, hallmarks of Siza’s projects. Let’s use it and cherish it.
